Įarly designs for Spyro depicted him as being large and bipedal, complete with being rather crude and beak mouthed. In early 1997, Spyro's purple color was chosen, due to it contrasting well with the greens and other colors found in many different environments. There were several other exisitng reptile characters that were green, such as Gex and Croc already on the same console at the time, so another color was chosen to help Spyro differentiate from these characters. In very early development, Spyro was depicted as green, but the development team noticed that he would blend into the grass in the levels too much. According to some developers, a second name - "Pyro" - was briefly used, being the Latin and Greek word for "fire." The name was altered to "Spyro" shortly afterwards, which would be the name that ultimately ended up sticking. Insomniac grew accustomed to the name "Pete" as it carried over through much of the game's development time, and was even reported on by retail outlets in late March 1998. This was because the development team assumed they would be sued by Disney and also to remind themselves to not ship the game out with the name "Pete". ĭuring development, the dragon was referred to by the codname "Pete", which was a reference to the 1977 Disney film, Pete's Dragon. During the design process, they decided that the dragon would be a character that appealed to 8 to 10 year olds they had to be cute, but at the same time, mischievous, bratty, unpredictable and something of an upstart. When the team decided to use a dragon, they began conceptualizing names and potential designs for the character, some of which depicted the character as a crude, beaked dragon. As a concept, Spyro was originally brought up by Insomniac in-house artist Craig Stitt, who had an interest in the fictional beasts. Insomniac team member Mark Cerny suggested they develop a child-friendly, platformer game after they were inspired by the success of games such as Super Mario 64.
